Great Deal Phoenix [Region 2]

There's no denying that this film is at least semi-formulaic, but the thing is that the writers and the director know how to USE the formula to the advantage of the viewer. That's the difference. Sure you got your obvious good guys and bad guys, but the acting is solid, the pacing is flawless, the characters are juicy, the plotting is strong, and the camerawork is spot on. So what's not to like?

Ray Liotta reins in his often cynically smirky-nasty persona thing to project the character of Harry Collins, a gambling-addicted cop who actually has feelings. Anthony LaPaglia is the bad cop, Mike Henshaw, and, formulaically, all bad--but very very good at being all bad. The babes are not just one-dimensionally hot, but instead, thanks to the presence of Angelica Huston, have substance and character as well as a tough veneer that hides some tenderness underneath. And yes, that's kinda formulaic too, but she's a world class actress who knows how to do this better than a whole lot of others out there.

Harry's gambiling and Mike's debt to Louie--played to smarmy perfection by Giancarlo Esposito (one of the best character actors acround)--results in the gang of four cops (Liotta, LaPaglia, Jeremy Piven and Daniel Baldwin) engaging in some illegal activity to net a lot of fast cash. But since the illegal activity is commited against a guy who himself does a lot of illegal stuff, it's OK, right?

Well, sort of. The main neo-noir plot convention--that things never turn out the way they're supposed to--is followed but again, it's fun to see how they play out in this punchy little flick.

I liked this a lot. This one you watch. Liotta's other neo-noir, Inferno, starts off great and then totally collapses. So that one you don't. But Phoenix works. Yeah.

Low budget flick struggles not to drown in cliches.. - C. Rocklein -
..although I've seen worse. Liotta is the reason I checked this out. I just saw him in BLOW with Johnie Depp. Great. But this one is a low-budget flick that mostly left me not beleiving in the story or the characters. Cliche stuff that was slapped together quickly for the undiscerning masses. Liotta's a likable actor and his charm is the only saving grace in this movie. I still wouldn't recommend it.

A Nice Suprise - Jenna - Anchorage, AK
This was an excellent movie. If I wasn't in a Ray Liotta film festival mood, I wouldn't have even know about it and that would have been a shame. It's now one of my offical favorite Liotta movies. It's one of those domino effect/house of cards movies where one action causes a reaction and the inevitable implosion. Subtle references to Crime and Punishment. The actors are pitch perfect- and believable. When the hammer finally strikes- it doesn't care if you are quasi-moral or a super-villian- it comes down just as hard, interesting.

Phoenix [Region 2] Overviews

The "Forget it, Jake, this is Chinatown" line in this well-cast contemporary noir comes near the story's end, when a female truck driver tells wounded fugitive-cop Harry Collins (Ray Liotta) that the desert town of Phoenix--built on sand and sustained by diverted water--has "no right to exist." Well, that would explain the sense of blurred virtue and vice portrayed in this film, the tale of a detective with a gambling problem and his three partners (Anthony LaPaglia, Daniel Baldwin, Jeremy Piven) manifesting varying levels of corruption. Written by Eddie Richey and directed by Danny Cannon, this expletive-rich and violent movie immediately strikes one as yet another Tarantino knock-off. But a handful of genuinely original ideas and scenes, aided immeasurably by a terrific cast that almost seems to lunge at the roles (including Anjelica Huston as an angry bartender who could let herself drift into an affair with Harry), keeps this drama on track. Yes, the plot does include an obligatory screwed-up heist mishandled by the male principals (wearing animal masks--how original!). But in the hands of Liotta and his pals, it all seems well worth it. Nice marks, too, for Tom Noonan's weird portrayal of a cruel bookie, Giancarlo Esposito's poisonous work as a loan shark, and Kari Wuhrer's all-too-brief scenes as a faithless wife. --Tom Keogh

For anyone who thought the Oscar-winning documentary March of the Penguins was the most marvelous cinematic moment for these nomads of the south, you haven't seen nothing yet. Happy Feet is an animated wonder about a penguin named Mumble who can't sing, but can dance up a storm. George Miller, the driving force behind the Babe (and Mad Max) movies, takes another creative step in family entertainment with this big, beautiful, music-fueled film that will have kids and their parents dancing in the streets. From his first moment alive, Mumble (voiced Elijah Woods) feels the beat and can't stop dancing. Unfortunately, emperor penguins are all about finding their own heart song, and the dancing youngster--as cute as he is--is a misfit. Luckily, he bumps into little blue penguins and a Spanish-infused group (led by Robin Williams) and begins a series of adventures. Miller has an exceptional variety of entertainment: Busby Berkley musical numbers, amusement-park thrills, exciting chase sequences (seals and orca lovers might like think otherwise), and even an environmental message that doesn't weigh you down. Best of all, you don't know where the movie is going in the last act, a rare occurrence these days in family entertainment. A fusion of rock songs, mashed-up and otherwise, are featured; this movie is as much a musical as a comedy. Mumble's solo dance to a new version of Stevie Wonder's I Wish by Fantasia, Patti, and Yolanda may be the most joyful moment on camera in 2006.

Its really about this girl about in highschool,meeting these asewome girls at lunch.(Well,she thinks they are asewome) and they have a party,playdate,etc.but then they get really mean.It should only be "PG" also. This film is more proof that Wisdom and Intelligence are not the same thing. Trixie isn't very bright or well educated, but what she lacks in book-learning she makes up for in street smarts and good morals. She's not unnattractive, just rather plain.
Cute, but not beautiful. Chews gum alot.
Sort of a female "Columbo" but even dimmer.
Just judging from her looks on the box cover
of the VHS cassette, I don't know why, but I just assumed
she was British. She looks stereotypically British,
and I was surprised to hear a sassy Chicago accent come
from those lips and not some kind of Cockney or other London accent...then again, the last feature film I watched was
THE LIMEY, so maybe that's still in my head subconsciously.

You have to get used to the title character's dialogue...I found it rather painful on my ears...and you will start talking like Trixie if you're not careful, with all the mangled metaphors!...I'm not sure it's really believable someone could talk that way so consistently, regardless of educational background...I'm sure the actress had to spend a lot of time working on her lines to get them so perfectly screwed up...sounds more like a foreigner whose first language is not English speaking that would be more believeable.
Some of it is mildly amusing, I'm sure some people howl with laughter the whole way through...but I didn't. I think Trixie would have been/could have been just as good a movie without the speech impediment...a "female Columbo" is not a bad idea for a movie, but they could have done it more effectively by studying Peter Falk's methods. Or if they insisted on the language schtick...I still say what dissapointed me most is that Trixie just looks so BRITISH. If Zellweger can pull of a Brit accent and Aussies can pull of US accents, this film would have worked nicely in London..."Trixie" could have taken lessons from Brad Pitt's Irish gypsy character in SNATCH, for instance.

Nick Nolte does a good job playing a bad guy. The female actress in the supporting role, the 16 yr old vixen, was
a positively disturbing character.

still, this was worth the cost of the rental.

Very enjoyable mystery - Trevor Henderson -
It is a pleasure to watch and listen to this movie very carefully to get all of the humor -- stay focused or you will miss a lot. Though you are laughing about this charming and interesting cast of misfits and semi-morons, you never really laugh at them as you try to work your way through Trixie's muddled haze to figure out who did what.

All the actors play their best known and acclaimed character roles to the hilt, never disappointing. Emily Watson is wonderful as the malapropped mystery solver -- who can play a wise simpleton better? Who can beat Nathan Lane as a cynical washed-up entertainer, never failing to impersonate, charm, and see through the act. Nick Nolte plays the sleezy, cynical, Senator, lampooning politicians saying nothing while always dazzling. Dermot Mulroney shines as the sexy simple not-so-good would-be gigolo with a heart. Who can play the sexy simpleton vamp better than Leslie Ann Warren? Ruby Pearli is captivating as the wannabe star lounging her way into and out of the mystery and notereity. There are too many other actors to name that add so much to this movie.

The camera work with mirrors is amazing and mesmerizing.

An enjoyable escape -- one of those movies you will enjoy the more often you watch it.

This movie invites comparison with Fargo-which is vastly superior. The difference is that while Emily Watson plays her character as simply stupid, Francis McDormand plays her character as innocent, giving Faro a major theme to explore while Trixie has nothing more than a device to play with.

Trixie Overviews

Alan Rudolph's "screwball film noir" (his definition) is a bit like Choose Me cast with buffoons--a handsome, smoothly directed, shaggy-dog mystery populated by thoroughly offbeat characters. Emily Watson plays malaprop-spewing, gum-chewing Trixie Zurbo, a security guard who wants to be a private detective. It's kind of like Gracie Allen trying to play Lauren Bacall in a Bogey film with a babble of mangled clichés and screwy punch lines. A shaggy, small-time thug wannabe (Dermot Mulroney) drags her into a mystery involving a smarmy, double-talking senator (Nick Nolte), a boozy past-her-prime showgirl (Lesley Anne Warren), and a blackmail scheme that ends up in murder. As a mystery it's less hard-boiled than over easy, but the performers go to town with the material. Nolte brilliantly rants an incoherent brand of political doublespeak, and Nathan Lane is patter perfect as a small- time entertainer delivering one-liners with a weary, wounded smile. At almost two hours it's a long road with meanders and detours, offering little payoff beyond the time spent with Rudolph's endearing out-of-time characters. This may prove mystifying and insubstantial to viewers who like a little more shape to their stories, but fans of Rudolph's quirky brand of filmmaking will find it well worth the trip. --Sean Axmaker

I have been looking for a boxed set of this series ever since I bought the VHS tapes many many years ago. I have yet to actually see an actual image of the boxed set.. just references to the fact that there was one... and I missed it. I think if they take these things off the market I wish they wouldnt advertise them and get peoples hopes up.

Overall though I have bought the individual DVDs of this series and the movies are great entertainment (the first being my favorite - Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer was just totally creepy and to go from Lucifer to the King of Middle Earth is quite a feat..LOL). I do recommend at least seeing the first to get the true flavor.

That's saying alot, but I think it's true. The movies are all very good, even the third one. I was surprised at how well they've held up, having not seen them for several years. This is a good, not great, series of movies, and I'm happy that I bought the whole set.

I was 19 when this movie came out and I memorized all the lines in it. At the time I was unsure about myself and life. Now I am 26 and I still can watch this movie and get something out of it.Maybe from a differant and more clear perspective from life,but still, I believe it is one of the greatest achievements in cinema.Every actress puts on her full transparent armor in this movie. Angie deserved the Oscar she got and all the ladies in the film gave heart wrenching performances.
This is worth the watch and the soundtrack is noteworthy as well.The book by Susana Kayson is also a well worthy read.

Girl, Interrupted Specifications

Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed journal-memoir, Girl, Interrupted bears inevitable resemblance to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and pale comparison to that earlier classic is impossible to avoid. The mental institution settings of both films guarantee a certain degree of déjà vu and at least one Oscar winner (in this case, Angelina Jolie), since playing a loony is any actor's dream gig. Unfortunately, director James Mangold seems to have misplaced the depth and delicacy of his underrated debut, Heavy, despite a great deal of earnest effort by everyone involved. It's easy to see why Winona Ryder chose to star in (and executive-produce) this nearly worthy adaptation of Kaysen's book, since it's a strong vehicle for female casting and potent drama. Mangold certainly got the former; whether he succeeded with the latter is not so clear.

To be sure, Ryder conveys the confusion and chaos that signified Kaysen's life during nearly 18 months of voluntary institutionalization beginning in 1967. But the film seems too eager to embrace the cliché that the "crazies" of the Claymoore women's ward are saner than the war-torn world outside, and lack of narrative focus gives way to semipredictable character study. Susanna (Ryder) is labeled with "borderline personality disorder," a diagnosis as ambiguous as her own emotions, and while Jolie chews the scenery as the resident bad-girl sociopath, Ryder effectively conveys an odyssey from vulnerable fear to self-awareness and, finally, to healing. The ensemble cast is uniformly superb, making this drama well worthwhile, even as it treads familiar territory. If it ultimately lacks dramatic impact, Girl, Interrupted makes it painfully clear that the boundaries of dysfunction are hazy in a world where everyone's crazy once in a while. --Jeff Shannon

It certainly says something if a graphic novel author helps out with a movie... especially if that creator swore he'd never let it be adapted. That is only one of the things that makes "Sin City," the adaptation of Frank Miller's comic, such a fascinating film.

"Sin City" is actually made up of three stories: In the depths of Basin (Sin) City, scarred hulk Marv (Mickey Rourke) sleeps with a beautiful prostitute, Goldie (Jaime King), only to find her dead beside him the next morning. Enraged, he goes on a killing spree to find her murderer, and learns that sinister cannibal Kevin (Elijah Wood) is responsible. But there's a powerful figure behind Kevin, who calls the shots.

Elsewhere in Sin City, Dwight (Clive Owen) does his best to defend Gail (Rosario Dawson) and the other Old Town prostitutes. But when Dwight kills a crooked cop, he has to somehow cover up the crime. And Hartigan (Bruce Willis), a cop with a failing heart, goes out of his job with a bang: He rescues little Nancy Callahan from a child molester who happens to be a senator's son. Hartigan is jailed, and when he gets out, he finds that Nancy (Jessica Alba) has grown into a lasso-twirling stripper. But the senator's son -- nicknamed Yellow Bastard -- is still after her.

"Sin City" is one of those few comic book adaptations that doesn't seem... well, cartoonish. Sure, it's the very image of noir, but the grim tone and grey characters are very real. It's not a movie for the fainthearted, but whoever enjoys the films of Quentin Tarantino (who directed one scene here) will surely be blown away.

Like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," this film is done almost entirely digitally. But unlike "Sky Captain," it has substance as well as style. All the sets and props are done with computers, and nearly everything is in black and white. Here and there we get a splash of colour -- red lipstick and matching dress, Yellow Bastard's face, green eyes.

The contents of three "Sin City" comic books are interwoven here, and Rodriguez is constantly faithful: A lot of these shots could have been lifted straight from the comic's pages. He also preserves the stark, black-and-white style that the graphic novels are known for. You can't get much more faithful than that.

"Sin City" is not quite a "Kill Bill" bloodfest, though -- surprisingly, this brutal movie has a dark sense of chivalry. Each story is about an outcast man defending a woman's honor, safety, or memory, even if he sacrifices himself in the process. "Sin City" wears its heart on its sleeve, even if that sleeve is bloodstained and torn.

Most of the actors do wonderful jobs -- Owen's dark photographer, Rourke's scarred strongman, Stahl's revolting Yellow Bastard, and Alba's surprisingly sweet stripper. Only a few, like Brittany Murphy, have lackluster performances. But perhaps the most memorable performances come from Bruce Willis and Elijah Wood. Willis plays his aging cop role with unusual grace, even when shooting the genitals off Yellow Bastard. And Wood plays Kevin with both creepy evil and spiritual ecstacy. All without saying a word.

"Sin City" is a remarkable, bleak, intense movie -- a halfway point between Tarantino and Raymond Chandler. An outstanding piece of work.

"Sin City" is one of those few comic book adaptations that doesn't seem... well, cartoonish. Sure, it's the very image of noir, but the grim tone and grey characters are very real. It's not a movie for the fainthearted, but whoever enjoys the films of Quentin Tarantino (who directed one scene here) will surely be blown away.

Like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," this film is done almost entirely digitally. But unlike "Sky Captain," it has substance as well as style. All the sets and props are done with computers, and nearly everything is in black and white. Here and there we get a splash of colour -- red lipstick and matching dress, Yellow Bastard's face, green eyes.

The contents of three "Sin City" comic books are interwoven here, and Rodriguez is constantly faithful: A lot of these shots could have been lifted straight from the comic's pages. He also preserves the stark, black-and-white style that the graphic novels are known for. You can't get much more faithful than that.

"Sin City" is not quite a "Kill Bill" bloodfest, though -- surprisingly, this brutal movie has a dark sense of chivalry. Each story is about an outcast man defending a woman's honor, safety, or memory, even if he sacrifices himself in the process. "Sin City" wears its heart on its sleeve, even if that sleeve is bloodstained and torn.

Most of the actors do wonderful jobs -- Owen's dark photographer, Rourke's scarred strongman, Stahl's revolting Yellow Bastard, and Alba's surprisingly sweet stripper. Only a few, like Brittany Murphy, have lackluster performances. But perhaps the most memorable performances come from Bruce Willis and Elijah Wood. Willis plays his aging cop role with unusual grace, even when shooting the genitals off Yellow Bastard. And Wood plays Kevin with both creepy evil and spiritual ecstacy. All without saying a word.

"Sin City" is a remarkable, bleak, intense movie -- a halfway point between Tarantino and Raymond Chandler. An outstanding piece of work.

I love tv shows i mean i buy them all but why everytime i buy a black series the dvds get the cut up treatment and by that i mean why does sister sister have to have the shows on the dvd not be the entire episode with everything it is ridiculuos and makes no since. the only black series i have that has been superb is the whole collection to the cosby show and that is wonderful but yet sad. I love Sister, Sister and I love Lisa she is so funny. The thing that brothers me the most is that they cut some stuff from some of the episodes. Like in Operation Deja Vu they cut off at least a minutes worth. I can tell I had it on tape. Without that stuff it really does not make sense. Everything else is great. I just hope season 3 comes out before 2010.

Oh by the way I can not believe that I have been writing reviews for a whole year. I hope to last longer.

The role of a spoiled, snotty, self-absorbed teen princess holy roller isn't so much a role for Dennis Richards (well, everything but the holy roller part) as a biography. Kirsten Dunst comes through with a stellar performance as preppy underdog, and Kirsten Alley is quite entertaining as the rich, overbearing mother reliving her glory days through her daughter. Entertaining from beginning to finsh!

Yep you read it right. This movie is so funny and I enjoyed it so much over the years that I plan on buying a second copy since my first dvd is getting a little scratched. When I pull this movie out to watch with friends at first they don't think much about it but after the intro with Adam West, they get intrigued after the first ten minutes they're hooked.
If had to whittle down my collection of DVDs to only 100, this one would surely make the cut.

Drop Dead Gorgeous [Region 2] Overviews

Subtle is not the word to describe Drop Dead Gorgeous, a mock documentary purporting to cover the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Teen America Beauty Pageant in Mount Rose, Minnesota. Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love) and Kirsten Dunst (Interview with a Vampire, Dick) are perfectly cast as a mother and daughter whose only ambition is to use the pageant to get out of their claustrophobic small-town lives. Opposing them are Denise Richards (Wild Things, Starship Troopers) and her mother, Kirstie Alley (Look Who's Talking), who just happens to be the pageant's organizer. The plot, which centers on contestants being murdered (mostly by flaming explosions), is clearly secondary to the backstage shenanigans and satirical portrayals of vanity, small-town corruption, and family dysfunction. There's not much suspense to the pageant itself, but Dunst is an endearing protagonist and along with the broad jokes are some excellent acting turns from the cast, particularly Barkin, Brittany Murphy (Clueless), Nora Dunn (a Saturday Night Live alumna), and the great character actress Allison Janney, who's played small roles in countless movies but finally gets a chance to shine as the supportive neighbor of Barkin and Dunst. In fact, for all the jokes and satirical jabs, in the end it's the characters' relationships that stay in your mind. A bonus: the soundtrack features a hard-rocking version of the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, performed with cool aplomb by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. --Bret Fetzer

Neverwas Review

This is one of those movies that barely appeared and promptly vanished in spite of a cast of excellent actors and a so-so premise beautifully worked out. Note that I said actors, not stars. A handful of less than stellar initial reviews probably also torpedoed the production upon release, which is a pity: god knows that far, far worse productions endure a much more scathing reception, and yet endure, spread all over the movie-publicity complex and your neighborhood Cineplex for months.

Aaron Eckhard plays Zack, a successful psychiatrist who is haunted by the suicide death of his troubled father when he was a small boy. His father, (Nick Nolte, seen in flashbacks or vintage film and home movie footage) was the writer of a fabulously successful childrens' classic about a wonderful magical land called "Neverwas" which he wrote for his son, making him the hero-adventurer. As an adult, Zack takes a job at the mental hospital where his father was confined for a brief period, hoping to find out why his father killed himself. Was it a failure of his doctor, of the hospital itself? It is hinted that Zack became a psychiatrist as a way of trying to fix that which was broken, in his father, and in himself, and others.

The clinic is a gorgeous but dilapidated, neo-classical building, near a perfect small New England town; the whole country around the clinic and town is a wildly scenic rural area spangled with fall colors. The whole look of the place is stunningly beautiful, barely and believably a half-step from the enchanted world that Zack's father created a quarter century before. He meets up with a childhood pal, Ally (Brittany Murphy) who seems to have never quite outgrown her own longing to visit "Neverwas", or her own attraction towards Zack. Among his patients in the hospital is the schizophrenic Gabriel Finch, played by the magnificent Ian McKellon. Gradually, Zack realized, as Gabriel opens up to him, that Gabriel and his father were friends... and that Gabriel thinks himself as the imprisoned King of "Neverwas".

"Neverwas" is in fact as much Gabriel's creation as it was his fathers... and it is as real to him as the forests beyond the boundaries of the hospital. The rest of the story is concerned with how Zack comes to terms with death, guilt, responsibility and the knowledge that sometimes there is nothing you can do, to help the ones you love... and sometimes you can. Ally lets go of her own childish dependence on the enchanted world... although they both do briefly set foot in it. The sequence towards the end of the movie, where she and Zack follow Gabriel into the woods, is beautifully done. With a growing sense of wonder, they identify many of the magical landmarks and seem almost on the verge actually stepping into the mythical "Neverwas"... but as it is subtly conveyed, they are still in the very real world. Only Gabriel, the schizophrenic can live in the world that he has created and maintained in his own mind for most of his life.

This is not a movie for children, although it may appear at first glance to resemble such fare as "The Bridge to Terabithia". It is more suited for teenagers and adults. While not one of those great unsung movies, it is still better worth the time than many other movie offerings taking up DVD shelf space, just for McKellen's star turn alone.

The Ramen Girl Review

The late Brittany Murphy shines in this heartwarming movie about self-discovery. Abby (Murphy) moves to Japan to be with her boyfriend but when she gets dumped, she finds herself in a fix. Unwilling to return to the States, thinking she still has a chance to make it up with her BF, Abby finds a new purpose in the ramen place across the street from her apartment. One rainy night, a despondent Abby wanders into the ramen shop after closing, and starts weeping. The chef Maezumi (Toshiyuki Nishida) and his wife are puzzled as they can't speak English and Abby can't converse in Japanese, so they offer some ramen to comfort her. It does that and more - inspired by the wonderful taste of the ramen, Abby is seized by a sudden desire to learn how to cook ramen, and like an annoying gnat, keeps harassing the chef until he finally takes her on as his apprentice - but not without giving her a really hard time (Abby's initial duties include cleaning the kitchen and the dirty toilets as well as waiting on tables).

The heated exchanges between Abby and Maezumi make for great entertainment- Maezumi as played by Nishida is an irascible taskmaster, who hides a lot of pain beneath his prickly demeanor. Abby, portrayed brilliantly by Murphy, is an initially naive, lost soul trying to find a purpose in life, and struggles to adapt to a foreign environment - not speaking Japanese doesn't help either. There is also a cast of secondary characters, such as the American woman who works as a call girl/mistress, the handsome, young Japanese executive who forms a relationship with Abby, the chef's wife, and a few eccentric regulars at the ramen place. The story does not get overly sappy, and the story, though predictable, is not without a couple of twists. The story might not be original, but it certainly is well-cast and the leads make this an engaging watch. I took away one star because I felt some of the secondary characters deserved more development, e.g. the call girl/mistress who just disappears half-way through the movie. On the whole, this is an interesting, and uplifting drama about searching for one's path in life, and showcases Brittany Murphy's acting talents to good effect. The movie is in both Japanese and English, with a lot of Japanese dialogue accompanied by English subtitles. Also recommended for those who'd like to watch another ramen-themed movie is Tampopo, a highly-entertaining movie.

As and American after living in Japan for almost 4 years and opening my own restaurant there I can totally relate to this movie. It is very realistic and true to life if an American would cook ramen in Japan. The personalities of the shop owners are portrayed to the "T" The humor is true to life as well. You don't need to have lived in Japan to understand and appreciate that their culture is not unlike this movie portrays. The wife wanting to become close to Abbey and siding with her and the shop owner and his tough exterior, drinking habits and loathe of Abbey in the beginning shows that most older Japanese men truely do not show their emotions and are very guarded with them as well as their secrets. Once you get to know the charactors and understand them the appreciation for this movie grows by leaps and bounds. Even in this day and age to befriend a Japanese national you must prove yourself to the fullest extent humanly possible and once you have broken the ice you have a friend/family for a lifetime. This movie depicts this very clearly and shows both sides of what it is like to be an American in Japan as well as being Japanese and having foreigners living among you.

The late Brittany Murphy stars in the charming culture-clash romantic comedy of THE RAMEN GIRL (2008). After relocating to Japan and being dumped by her boyfriend, Abby (Murphy) drowns her sorrows at a local Ramen shop. Delighted by the traditional dish of noodles, vegetables and pork, Abby resolves to learn how to cook the meal herself...triggering an hilarious battle of wills with her reluctant "sensei" (Toshiyuki Nishida) in the process!

Beautifully filmed on location in Japan, THE RAMEN GIRL is an adorable movie and Ms Murphy does a lovely job in the lead. On the downside, Becca Topol's screenplay is rather disjointed, peppered with too many characters who start off strong but seem to go nowhere (Tammy Blanchard as Gretchan, Daniel Evans as Tom, etc.).

Purely for fans of the late great Brittany Murphy, this will always be a must-see, but I'd love for this forgotten film to find an even larger audience. It deserves to.

Doctor Who is back! The Time Lord Returns

It's always been something a bit 'dangerous to continue in the attempt, that the venerable British sci-fi franchise, Doctor Who. The revival of a show that is managed by the early sixties and gathered millions upon millions of believers can be a dangerous activity. Okay, but can be very profitable.

So when BBC Wales announced in 2003 that they intended to revive Doctor Who fans met the news with concern and excitement in equal measure. The doctor had only oneOutput the total length of the display was canceled because of the show in 1989 - the film with Fox television network as the eighth Doctor Paul McGann - and poor ratings left little doubt that the franchise is dead and buried.

E 'then with a sense of fear that the BBC first aired the first TV series in 16 years. Salford actor Christopher Eccleston (in Sixty Seconds, Gone was 28 days later), the unlikely choice for the part of medical ninth, with the restunlikely that the game, the choice of the 90s singer Billie Piper's Spunky PAL, Rose Tyler.

Usually playful and witty, the character of the Tennants' much closer to the human characters in the show - in particularCompanion Rose.

However, we can expect fireworks during the second season of Doctor Who. The emotions are high, as the doctor approaches his companion Rose, and must emphasize the fact that immortality may be the proximity of a Time Lord is a curse and a blessing. He can lead to love a mortal?

Meanwhile, the doctor must face his eternal foes the Daleks - with another old enemy, the Cybermen. In these battles, you can also get help inShape of a face from the past - and his trusty robot dog, K-9.

The second season of Doctor Who promises all the excitement of the first and much more. Time travel - and even between dimensions - The doctor will continue to fight the good fight against the enemies of 'universe. If it is the challenge, we must wait.

Welcome to Sin City, a city where a senator has access to Manic son of his youth, when you're more likely to be killed by the police, as was a criminal and prostitutes who have their own part of town where they can distribute the own brand of justice, regardless of public officials.

Sin City is also home to Sin City, black graphic novel (which I call them comic books) with the legendary Frank Miller comics. Frank Miller and Robert Rodguiez with a little help from QuentinTarnatino bring his world, very pessimistic, sadistic life in the new movie with the same name and brings us along for a wild ride through a very violent and morally corrupt imagination Miller.

Sin City is all that we expect to hate on a spectacular movie violent, sadistic, misogynist by default, and no one is devoid of any trace of morality, but despite all that is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

First, it is visually stunning. Rodriguezapparently slavishly adhered to Miller comics boring and took the pages of comics to the big screen. The parameters are fantastic, and color, this great black and white with touches of good position, the color is amazing. Rodriguez, who brought us films like "El Mariachi and Desperado, like style, as it always was, and just as brilliant. It really puts a world of victims against perpetrators, where nobody really wins, and each is aLoser.

Do not disappoint the second Sin City's all-star cast, with the exception of Jessica Alba, who is irrelevant and completely out of her league acting in its role as Nancy, a stripper with a heart of gold. Some important results include Benicio del Toro, who, like Johnny, the setting, or sadistic and violent cop and ex-boyfriend of Alice Brittany Murphy and Clive Owen Murphy 's reading of a new interest in the love and Johnny is awesomeNemesis.

But the best performance of all the Mickey Rourke as Teddy half-human, half beast, that the murder of a prostitute, Goldie, who is the only person who showed kindness is not revenge. When they were found dead, having spent a night together, apologized Teddy crimes. He vows to find the culprit for her murder and proceeds to do anything to get there.
